P1702 – Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Fault (Ford)
Description
P1702 on Ford vehicles indicates a fault in the Transmission Range (TR) sensor circuit or the signals used to determine the selected gear position. The problem may be caused by the sensor itself, wiring, connectors, power or ground faults, or related transmission circuits. Diagnosis should confirm the electrical fault before the TR sensor is replaced.
Need More Than Just the Fault Code?
A diagnostic scanner with live data, freeze-frame information and the right system access can help you investigate the actual cause before replacing parts.
Compare Diagnostic ScannersSymptoms
- Engine may not crank in Park or Neutral
- Incorrect or missing gear position display
- Harsh or abnormal shifting
- Transmission warning or Check Engine Light
- Vehicle may enter fail-safe or limited transmission operation
- Intermittent starting or gear-selection problems
Causes
- Faulty or misaligned Transmission Range (TR) sensor
- Open or short circuit in TR sensor wiring
- Corroded, loose or damaged transmission connectors
- Power supply or ground fault in the TR sensor circuit
- Damaged transmission harness
- Related transmission sensor or shared circuit fault
- PCM or TCM fault in rare cases
Diagnosis
- Read and record all transmission-related fault codes
- Check live transmission range data while moving the selector through each gear position
- Inspect the TR sensor connector and transmission wiring for corrosion, damage or loose terminals
- Check the TR sensor power supply and ground circuits
- Test TR sensor signal circuits for open or short circuits
- Check selector cable or linkage adjustment where applicable
- Compare the indicated gear position with the actual selector position
- Follow the Ford-specific diagnostic procedure for the transmission fitted to the vehicle
Repair
- Repair damaged wiring, terminals or connectors
- Correct power or ground faults in the TR sensor circuit
- Adjust the selector linkage if testing confirms incorrect adjustment
- Replace the Transmission Range sensor only if testing confirms it is faulty
- Repair related transmission wiring or shared sensor circuits when identified
- Diagnose PCM or TCM faults only after external circuits and components have been verified
