This troubleshooting section covers the most common diagnostic-tool problems before a scanner is assumed to be faulty. Start with power, connection, vehicle identification and software version, then separate a scanner communication issue from a vehicle fault.

Scanner does not power on

• Check whether the vehicle diagnostic socket has power.
• Confirm vehicle battery voltage is stable.
• Inspect the OBD cable and connector for bent or damaged pins.
• If the scanner can also power through USB, test that separately to distinguish a vehicle power problem from a scanner problem.

Scanner powers on but will not connect

• Switch the ignition on.
• Confirm the correct vehicle / protocol is selected.
• Use manual vehicle selection if AutoVIN fails.
• Update the scanner software.
• On older vehicles, confirm the correct legacy adapter is being used.

AutoVIN does not recognize the vehicle

AutoVIN is a convenience feature, not the only way to diagnose a vehicle. Use manual vehicle selection and confirm the exact make, model and production year before continuing.

A service function or active test is missing

Advanced functions depend on the exact vehicle, ECU and software coverage. A scanner may support the vehicle for full-system diagnostics without exposing every service function, adaptation or active test on that model.

Fault codes return after clearing

Clearing a code does not repair the cause. Record freeze-frame and relevant live data first. If the underlying fault remains active, the code can return immediately.

Update error or “This is not an iCarsoft product”

Use the updater matched to the exact device / serial number. Do not use an updater copied from another model even if the scanner looks physically similar. See Software Updates.
