Use this section to understand what “compatible” means before choosing or troubleshooting a diagnostic scanner. Vehicle support is not only about whether a scanner plugs into the OBD connector: manufacturer-specific diagnostics, service functions, coding and active tests depend on the exact vehicle, model year and ECU.

Three levels of compatibility

1. Standard OBD2 / EOBD

Basic emissions-related engine diagnostics. A tool may read standard OBD2 data even when it does not support manufacturer-specific systems for that vehicle.

2. Full-system manufacturer diagnostics

Access to supported vehicle control units such as transmission, ABS, SRS, body systems, climate control and other manufacturer-specific modules.

3. Advanced functions

Service resets, adaptations, bidirectional active tests and ECU coding are the most vehicle-specific layer. A scanner may support a vehicle for full-system diagnostics without supporting every advanced function on every ECU.

Legacy diagnostic connectors

  • Older Mercedes-Benz: selected models use the round 38-pin connector and require the iCarsoft PIN38 adapter.
  • Older BMW: selected models use the round BMW 20-pin connector and require the iCarsoft PIN20 adapter.
  • Early Sprinter: selected models use a separate 14-pin diagnostic connector.

Choose by vehicle group

If a specific service function matters, use the exact product page / manual and verify the function at model / ECU level rather than relying on a generic “compatible with this brand” statement.
