P1278 – Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 Response Fault (Nissan)

Description

P1278 on Nissan vehicles indicates that the ECM has detected an abnormal response from Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1. The sensor is used to monitor the air-fuel mixture upstream of the catalytic converter. The fault may be caused by the sensor itself, wiring or connector problems, intake or exhaust leaks, fuel-pressure issues or other conditions that affect mixture control.

Need More Than Just the Fault Code?

A diagnostic scanner with live data, freeze-frame information and the right system access can help you investigate the actual cause before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light may be on
  • Fuel economy may decrease
  • Engine may hesitate or run unevenly
  • Air-fuel mixture may be difficult to control
  • Other fuel-trim or A/F sensor codes may also be stored
  • No obvious drivability symptoms may be present

Causes

  • Faulty Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1
  • Open or short circuit in the A/F sensor wiring
  • Loose, damaged or corroded sensor connector
  • Intake air leak
  • Exhaust leak affecting sensor readings
  • Incorrect fuel pressure or fuel delivery
  • Fuel injector fault
  • Incorrect PCV hose connection or PCV valve fault
  • Mass Air Flow sensor problem

Diagnosis

  • Read and record all stored and pending fault codes
  • Check freeze-frame data and note the operating conditions when P1278 was stored
  • Monitor Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 live data with a compatible diagnostic scanner
  • Check Short-Term and Long-Term Fuel Trim values
  • Inspect the intake system for unmetered air leaks
  • Inspect the exhaust system for leaks that could affect sensor readings
  • Check fuel pressure and fuel delivery
  • Inspect the A/F sensor connector and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Check the PCV system and Mass Air Flow sensor if fuel trims are abnormal
  • Follow the Nissan-specific A/F Sensor 1 diagnostic procedure for the vehicle and engine

Repair

  • Repair damaged wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Repair intake or exhaust leaks
  • Correct fuel-pressure or fuel-delivery faults
  • Repair PCV or airflow-measurement faults when identified
  • Repair injector faults when confirmed
  • Replace Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1 only if testing confirms the sensor is faulty
  • Verify the repair by clearing the code and confirming that P1278 does not return
