P1405 – DPFE EGR Sensor Upstream Hose Off or Plugged (Ford)

Description

P1405 on Ford vehicles indicates that the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) system has detected an abnormal pressure signal from the upstream EGR hose. The fault is commonly caused by a disconnected, blocked, damaged or incorrectly routed DPFE hose, but related EGR tube or DPFE sensor problems may also be involved.

Need More Than Just the Fault Code?

A diagnostic scanner with live data, freeze-frame information and the right system access can help you investigate the actual cause before replacing parts.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light may be on
  • Engine may run normally with no obvious symptoms
  • EGR-related drivability problems may occur
  • Rough running or hesitation may occur in some cases
  • Other EGR-related fault codes may also be stored

Causes

  • Upstream DPFE hose disconnected
  • Upstream DPFE hose blocked or restricted
  • Damaged, cracked or incorrectly routed DPFE hose
  • Moisture or ice inside the DPFE hose
  • Blocked or damaged EGR tube
  • Incorrectly mounted or faulty DPFE sensor
  • Wiring or connector fault affecting the DPFE sensor

Diagnosis

  • Read and record all stored and pending fault codes
  • Check for additional EGR-related codes
  • Inspect both DPFE hoses for correct connection and routing
  • Check the upstream hose for blockage, moisture, ice, cracks or collapse
  • Inspect the EGR tube for damage or restriction
  • Inspect the DPFE sensor mounting, connector and wiring
  • Monitor DPFE live data with a compatible diagnostic scanner
  • Compare DPFE readings with the expected no-flow condition
  • Follow the Ford-specific EGR diagnostic procedure for the vehicle and engine

Repair

  • Reconnect a disconnected DPFE hose
  • Replace a damaged, cracked or restricted DPFE hose
  • Remove confirmed blockage or moisture from the hose and correct the underlying cause
  • Repair or replace a damaged or restricted EGR tube
  • Repair damaged wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Replace the DPFE sensor only if testing confirms it is faulty
  • Verify the repair by clearing the code and confirming that P1405 does not return
